Handcrafted and Featured Search Results

Handcrafted Search Result is a banner that appears at the top across the width of the Search Results Page. This is the SE003 Handcrafted Search Results as shown on the OSG Search Results Layout example. While there were two other styles of handcrafted search banners (SE001 and SE002) created in the initial launch of Emerson.com, we have chosen to supersede them with the SE003. Existing usage is still allowed, but authors should only use the SE003 for new handcrafted searches. The SE003 has a lower profile that allows more of the search results grid to show "above the fold". There can only be one Handcrafted Search Result banner for a given keyword search term. Note, a keyword can consist of one or more words grouped together. As this shows at the top of the page above the search results, the handcrafted search banner is tied only to the keyword(s) and not tied to a given content type like the Featured Search Results are. You can, though, have both a Handcrafted Search and one or more Featured Search Results for the same keyword(s).

There is a Page called "Handcrafted Search Hidden Page" that is a child of the Homepage in each locale. This should already be set up in your site. In the Navigation of this page, you will add the Page associated with your Handcrafted Search Result banner. Note, this Page is not intended to show anywhere on the site. It is simply the way the result banner is built in order to display on the top of the search results.

To create a Handcrafted Search result you will need to create a Page that includes your SE003 (or historically the SE001 or SE002) in the main section of the Placement. The instructions for the SE003 (and the SE001 and SE002) are included in the Content Author's Guide. While a Page Title is not used, it is required in the Page. Additionally, you will need to set a URL for the page on the Metadata Tab.

Featured Search Results are search results that appear at the top of the results list for a given search when a targeted keyword is matched. These reulsts have a text note "Featured Result" when displayed. There can be multiple featured results for a given search term (keyword), unlike handcrafted search which can have only one "top banner" per search term keyword. There can be featured results for Documents, Videos and Web Pages. Other tabs in the Search Results do not have featured search results. You can have both a Handcrafted Search and one or more Featured Search Results for the same keyword(s).

In CoreMedia Studio, under the "Content" folder of each locale is a folder called "Featured Search". In this folder are three additional folders for Documents, Videos and Web Pages. This should already be set up in your site. Note, each of these three folders must have a Folder Properties CoreMedia Document with the corresponding page to the content such as "Featured Search Web Pages" as the Context. There is also a "Featured Search Documents" and "Featured Search Videos" Page corresponding to each folder. These three pages have no content and are simply used by the system to understand the organization of the featured search results. These three pages are children of "Featured Search Hidden Page" which is a child of the Homepage. Again, this should already be  set up in your site.

Additional (one-time) configuration is required in the Settings File "SearchConfiguration". In this file is a Struct that has been created with a Property called "featuredsearch". Under that Property Struct are three Strings for video, webpage, and document that link their Value to the appropriate Page noted above.

To create a featured Search result you will need to create a Collection in the appropriate folder for the content you are featuring. For example, if you wish to feature a Download (Document) you will need to create a Collection in the Documents folder.

In the collection:

  • while a Teaser Title is not required, you should add a description of the content of the Collection for reference
  • The only thing required on the Content Tab are the Item(s) in the Items List. Add as many Items (In this example, Downloads) that you wish to include as Featured Results
  • On the Metadata Tab you will add the Keyword(s) in the Free Keywords field. Keywords can actually be one or more words grouped together. Add the word or word combinations by typing in the field and pressing enter for each.
