Almost every consumer product in the world involves chemistry and chemical engineering at some level. Also, engineers are problem solvers and I’m excited by finding solutions to challenges.
What’s the best part of being an engineer? Being an engineer has allowed me flexibility to dive into different roles from a support and field engineer in Manila to an instructor in Singapore and now in Austin, Texas. All the while, engineering has allowed me to travel and meet people, including many wonderful customers, from Asia to here in North America.
What inspires you most about being an engineer? It might seem funny, but Marie Kondo is my current inspiration. To me, she exemplifies how you can turn things around with a positive attitude and influence others in the process. Her method is so simple, but effective and helps remind me to find ways to spark joy in my life and others.

I leverage my engineering and business backgrounds to understand the market and our competitors and develop a product roadmap that continually evolves Plantweb Optics to meet customer and market needs.
Why engineering? Engineering is all about solving problems. Today, many opportunities exist around the prevalence of data. With all this data being generated by devices and systems, how do you use this information to gather new insights and drive better decision making? That’s an exciting problem to solve and one of the ways that engineering challenges me in unique ways.
What’s the best part of being an engineer? You never know what you might be working on next. Through my experiences, I’ve had the opportunity to work in all sorts of different functions and industries. My first role in Emerson was in project management for power plants and applying automation technologies to control the plants. Next, I spent a year working on business development for wind energy and it was exciting to learn about and see the growth in renewable and alternative energy. Today I’m working in reliability and how we help our customers improve operations by improving their ability to use data.

Why engineering? The night before my final exam in college physics, we had a review session with the professor. He told an anecdote to the class about a student that would ask questions during office hours about the practice exam; she not only wanted to know the correct answers, she wanted to know why they were the correct answers. He later told me that story was about me. From early childhood through to high school and college, I had a passion for problem solving and understanding how and why things work the way they do. I’m an analytical and curious person by nature, and these traits align well with a career in engineering. A career in engineering involves a lifetime of continuous learning and fulfilling challenges, with many possibilities across different fields including pharmaceuticals, environmental, food and beverage, automotive, and energy.
What’s the best part of being an engineer? The best part of being an engineer is applying my knowledge, skills, and analytical mindset to solve problems and have a positive impact. The next best part is I get to do all of that while collaborating with a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary team of other amazing engineers. It has been an extremely fulfilling career path for me with continuous learning, challenges, and successes.
What inspires you most about being an engineer? My father was a Chemical Engineer (also Ph.D), and we shared a curious, studious, and analytical nature. From a young age, we would study together and early on he encouraged me to consider this career path. Needless to say, I’m forever grateful that I did.
Time with Emerson: 9 years
Education: Bachelor’s degree, Electrical Engineering (emphasis in automation and control) degree from the Federal University of Itajuba (UNIFEI) in Brazil. Currently in the Executive MBA program at Baylor University.
What do you do? I’m currently a product marketing manager and one of the subject-matter experts for cybersecurity and networking for the DeltaV control system. My responsibility as a product marketing manager is to make sure we come up with innovative solutions so that the DeltaV system can best help our customers safely and securely operate plants across the globe.
Why engineering? I grew up “breaking” things apart to learn how those things operated. I always found ways to fix things and I would gather more information about specific topics, which I had to do before Google or the Internet existed. I knew early that engineering was for me, no questions there, and a couple of internships exposed me to its diverse opportunities. As an engineer, I’ve worked in automation, production, maintenance, project execution, consulting, and business development. With engineering, I get to keep putting all my passion into new subject areas all the time.
What’s the best part of being an engineer? Engineering is curiosity and if you’re curious, you feel you are always young and you always have the energy and passion to learn more and every day is more exciting. It’s addictive in that way. In a more practical way, engineering has very broad applications and the logical, problem-solving mindset that engineers have helps in many different things beyond technical projects. As an engineer I feel comfortable dealing with finance, economy, statistics. Since I also enjoy communicating closely with people I get to use my technical expertise to work directly to help customers.
What inspires you most about being an engineer? My parents, my spouse, and my working colleagues, with their diversity of knowledge, inspire me daily. They help me build my personal and professional skills and expertise and inspire me to always be a better person. I truly believe that you don’t have to be the most famous person in the world or the highest rank in your organization to be and feel successful. There are many ways to be happy and complete wherever you are.

What inspires you most about being an engineer? My father has always been my inspiration. He really showed me through hard work all things are possible.
